Neopictorialist
This is ongoing series of portraits created with 35mm black and white film. I have always felt that I was revisiting past lives with my camera. At first I was criticized why black and white film? When the world is bright with blues and reds and greens and golds? I watched early silent films with my mother and was fascinated with the fashion, and the poetical light and shadow of cinema. As a young boy, each scene was so charming and imaginatively bold. The Neo-Pictorialist series is my homage to Pictorialism and these bygone eras. A nostalgic style and aesthetic that defines and respects photographic history. These are all Individuals that have organically entered my life in Alberta, Canada. They are creators, musicians and poets. survivors of gender or race or sexual violence and have championed the living. The magicians to the lyricism of the light. They are compassionate teachers, and I feel I am a student to these storytellers. The careful listener with the camera, one majestic frame at a time. All the individuals that touch our lives, remain part of this cultural dialogue for years to follow. We deepen as we build compassion and community and friendships. When we open the album of of our dreams and hold the photographic print in our hands, and share a deep respect to life and the memory with the right timing of the heart.
